Why Love Hash Browns?

I love hash browns because they are very easy to make and use simple ingredients. Hash browns take a short time to prepare and contain protein, fat, and fibre, which are nutritious. They are crispy and tender, and that’s why I like them. My family members also like them, and I use them for my kids’ tiffing, breakfast, and snack time.

What Type of Potatoes to Use for Hash Browns?

This is a good question! Any type of potato can be used to make hash browns, including russet potatoes, Yukon Gold, red potatoes, or new potatoes.

But if you’re asking which type I prefer, I like russet potatoes because their crispiness and moisture are so good. However, any potato can be used for hash browns.

  1. Potatoes: Of course, you’ll need potatoes. Use 2 large russet potatoes.

Instructions for Cooking Crispy Hash Browns

  1. Prepare the potatoes: First, peel the potatoes and grate them with a grater. Then, place them in a large bowl with cold water and rinse them well. Use a kitchen towel to tightly wring out the potatoes, removing as much excess water as possible.

  2. Mix the ingredients: Transfer the potatoes to a mixing bowl and add the carrots, onions, egg, salt, black pepper, and rice flour. Mix well until everything is combined. The carrot should also be washed like the potatoes, and when you mix them together, the colour combination looks amazing. The mixture should have some thickness. Once the mixture is ready, it’s time to fry.

  3. Fry the hash browns: Take a frying pan or skillet and heat it over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, add 1 spoon of butter and 3 spoons of oil. When the oil is hot, place the potato mixture in the pan in a 1/2-inch thick layer, like making a pancake. Cook for 5 minutes, adjusting the heat to medium-low as needed. The potatoes should be crispy on the outside and moist on the inside when cooked well.

After 5 minutes, check if the potatoes are golden brown and crispy, then flip them over to brown the other side. Cook for another 5 minutes. Once done, transfer the hash browns from the hot oil and place them on a kitchen paper towel.

  1. Serve: Serve the hash browns immediately while hot. Enjoy them with poached eggs, soft-boiled eggs, sauce, pancakes, or a mix of tomato, cucumber, and carrot salad. You can add any other items you’d like to serve with them.
